I think it is very interesting to analyse this map and see how some of these "roles" still apply nowadays. I believe we still see Russia as "the big bad wolf" and Portugal is often perceived as the "watching owl" observing from the corner. I think the challenge of the "new" Europe we've been discussing is also for the countries to adapt themselves to new roles.

I totally agree with Vanessa's comment. The fact that each country has its "role" in Europe is very interesting, because each one also has different culture, language, behaviour... In this especific context, "The Great War", the fact that some countries have had to make aliances had not exclude their identity as the country population. In my opinion, this is of great importance.
